In 1946, the VFW Post on W. Morrison was established and their original building was constructed the next year. With over 200 members, this group of Veterans of Foreign Wars has been giving to the Tampa community since their inception. The counseling and comraderie between members has been invaluable to current and past service members, but they haven't stopped there. Each year this Post has helped with direct and financial assistance to local projects. Almost $18,000 was raised for youth and other programs during the past year alone. The Post had many more projects planned, but a serious fire to the building over the weekend has put a stop to those plans for now. Commander Bruce Sitki indicated that the paid for building is insured, but at this time, the adjusters are still evaluating the damage in order to determine their claim amount. It is a pretty sure bet that additional funds are going to be needed. Plans are to rebuild as soon as possible, however, with insurance companies as they are and city permitting as it is, this might take some time.

Former Post Commander Terry McMillen was keeping vigil over the post when we stopped by for information about this article. He spoke of the Post's plans to help several youth programs in the coming months. His sadness at not being able to assist with these projects while the post is being rebuilt was clear.

As our country is involved in military action in Afghanistan and Iraq today, it has made each of us more aware of the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces. The VFW is one of those long standing locations for veterans to share thoughts and seek understanding from those that understand them. Since 1946 the Col. Russel P. Harris Rudy J. Santacrus VFW Post has served the Tampa community, now it is time for us to help them.
